Rural Villages

The seaside towns of the Macleay Valley Coast are true havens of activity. Crescent Head, Grassy Head, Hat Head, Stuarts Point and South West Rocks.

There are also many rural villages to explore.

Smithtown Bridge

The twin towns of Gladstone and Smithtown lie on opposite banks of the Macleay River and are linked by the Smithtown Bridge.

Both towns have picnic and barbeque facilities and anglers can wet a line at the wharves.

Gladstone riverside park features a grove of red cedars planted in recognition of the town’s early links with the timber industry. Old Lodge Gallery and Riverbank Cafe offers a beautiful river outlook and crafts. The antiques store next door is the old post office and is the place to search for Australian pine and cedar furniture.

Waterfront Restaurant, Sithtown

In Smithtown, rummage for treasures at the old wares shop, visit the bowling club or stop at the hotel. The pub has a wonderful outlook over the river and a restful beer garden. North of Kempsey, on Taylors Arm Road, is the famous “Pub with No Beer”. With Kempsey as your base, a drive to the pub is a great day trip.

Frederickton, known locally as “Fredo” has an elevated position which provides sweeping views over the Macleay’s lush river flats. Fredo, a 1999 Tidy Town, is also famous for its award-winning pie shop. Its approximately 148 varieties of pie come highly recommended.

Willawarren Pub

The village of Willawarrin, west of Kempsey is a focal point for the local farming community and has a real country pub. Beyond Willawarrin, the Armidale road continues through splendid scenery, rising and falling as it follows the Macleay River. Follow the windings of the Macleay River past Slim Dusty's childhood home at Nulla Nulla.

The village of Bellbrook is registered by the National Trust as a significant example of a turn of the century hamlet. Enjoy a hearty homestyle meal at the Bellbrook Hotel or enjoy a cold ale.
